When do I apply to colleges/universities in America?

I am confused as to when i should be applying to colleges in the US. In Australia we finish high school in November, so basically, in November 2013 I would be graduating high school. Do I apply for colleges this year in 2012 or do I wait till 2013? Thanks for your help !
